What We Mean When We Say We Love Credit Unions

Every year, #ILoveMyCreditUnion Day invites us to celebrate the impact credit unions have on the people and communities they serve. It's an opportunity to recognize an industry built on the philosophy of people helping people and the countless professionals who bring that philosophy to life every day.

This year, NLCUP wanted to celebrate the day a little differently. Instead of telling you why credit unions matter, we asked the people who know them best.

We invited members of the NLCUP community from across the country to answer one simple question: Why do you love your credit union?

We expected stories about meaningful careers, strong teams, and memorable member experiences. We received all of those. But we also found something deeper.

Across 7 different credit unions, in 7 different roles, the responses echoed the same values. They spoke of leaders who invest in their employees. Of coworkers united by a shared purpose. Of members who become family. Of communities that find not only financial services, but trust, belonging, and opportunity.

Some stories began with a scholarship. Others began with a hug from a grateful member. One began with a little girl whose parents walked into a credit union looking for a place they could trust.

Together, these stories remind us that the credit union difference isn't found in a product or a service. It's found in the people who choose, every day, to make someone's life a little better.

In celebration of I Love My Credit Union Day, we're honored to share their words.

"I finally work for a company whose heart matches my own."

Monica Busz Learning and Development Associate, MidWest America Federal Credit Union

“When people ask me why I love my credit union, the answer is simple: because we live our mission.

Many organizations talk about giving back to their communities, helping people, and making a difference. At MidWest America, I have the privilege of seeing those words become actions every single day. We don't just say we care—we prove it through the work we do, the programs we create, and the people who show up each day determined to make someone else's life a little better.

One of the things that makes me most proud is that I finally work for an organization that actively looks for new ways to help people. Whether it's creating innovative programs, supporting local initiatives, or finding solutions for members during difficult times, MidWest is constantly asking, "How can we do more?"

For me, that means a lot on a personal level.

Life doesn't always follow the path we expect, and I've faced challenges that have shaped who I am today. Because of those experiences, helping others isn't just part of my job—it's part of my purpose. Working for a company that serves people facing hardships, uncertainty, or obstacles similar to those I've encountered allows me to give back in a meaningful way. Every day, I have the opportunity to help someone navigate a challenge, find hope, or discover a solution they didn't know existed.

That's incredibly fulfilling.

I also love the way MidWest invests in the communities we serve. One example that stands out to me is our Toys for Tots initiative last year. Seeing employees come together to support children and families reminded me that our impact extends far beyond financial services. We are helping build stronger communities, creating opportunities, and bringing hope to people when they need it most.

What I'm most proud of, though, is the people.

Every day I get to work alongside individuals with generous hearts who genuinely care about our members, our coworkers, and our communities. Their compassion, dedication, and willingness to help others inspire me constantly. They are the reason MidWest feels less like a workplace and more like a family united by a common purpose.

I love my credit union because I believe in what we do. I believe in our mission. I believe in our people. And I believe that when an organization is committed to serving others with compassion and purpose, it has the power to change lives.

I'm proud to be part of that story. I finally work for a company whose heart matches my own.”

"All for One isn't just a motto. It's how we operate every single day."

Cesar Cortez, AVP of Risk Management, First Alliance Credit Union

“I love my credit union because “All for One” isn’t just a motto, it’s how we operate every single day at First Alliance Credit Union. I’ve never experienced a culture so dedicated to making a real difference. Our team is passionate, persistent, and united in our mission to create opportunities for those who are underserved and often overlooked.

What makes me most proud is knowing that every day, I get to work alongside colleagues who share the same purpose: expanding financial access and empowering our community to thrive. We’re not motivated by a paycheck, but by the impact we make together. And as a “little credit union that could,” we prove that size doesn’t limit our vision.

I’m especially inspired by our CEO, whose strategic and visionary leadership is always anchored by a genuine commitment to our mission and the credit union movement. All for one, we don’t just talk about it, we live it, and that’s why I love my credit union!”

"Our work is about people, not transactions."

Jesus Arellano, Engagement Manager, Latino Community Credit Union

“One of the things that inspires me the most about working at Latino Community Credit Union is seeing the real impact we make every single day. We do so much more than provide financial products and services, we help families build confidence, create opportunities, and achieve dreams they once thought were out of reach. That is why I truly love my credit union.

One story that reminds me of our mission is Brenda Hernandez's.

When Brenda was just nine years old, her parents, new to the United States, walked into an Latino Community Credit Union branch looking for a place they could trust. They found more than a financial institution. They found a welcoming team that spoke their language, answered every question with patience, and helped them begin their financial journey. What started with a checking and savings account eventually became a foundation for building credit, financial stability, and hope for the future.

Years later, Brenda followed in her parents' footsteps by opening her own LCCU savings account. As a wife, mother, and DACA recipient, she never imagined she would receive an LCCU Scholarship. Today, she is pursuing a degree in Project Management at Wake Technical Community College, and that scholarship is allowing her to focus on her education instead of worrying about how to pay for tuition and books. She can take more classes, graduate sooner, spend more time with her children, and move closer to her dream of opening a construction company that serves the Latino community.

What inspires me even more is that Brenda is already giving back. Through volunteer work, she provides free notary and translation services while helping others understand the importance of saving, building credit, and believing in themselves, just as Latino Community Credit Union once did for her family.

Stories like Brenda's remind me that our work is about people, not transactions. Every account we open, every scholarship we award, every financial education class we teach, and every partnership we build has the potential to change someone's life for generations.

That is why I love my credit union. Because every day, I have the privilege of being part of an organization that empowers people, strengthens communities, and proves that when we invest in others, we create opportunities that last far beyond banking.”

"Their belief in me has inspired me to believe in myself."

Ana Chavez, Mortgage Loan Officer, Kelly Community Federal Credit Union

“From the moment I joined my credit union, I have felt supported, encouraged, and trusted. My leaders have seen potential in me and have invested in my growth by giving me opportunities to attend conferences, participate in training, and continue developing both professionally and personally. Their belief in me has inspired me to believe in myself, and that has made all the difference.

I also admire our leadership because they never stop asking how we can become better—not just as employees, but as a credit union serving our members and our community. They lead with compassion, encourage new ideas, and genuinely want to see each of us succeed.

What makes me the proudest is our commitment to the community. We don't just talk about making a difference—we live it every day by serving others, lending a helping hand, and building meaningful relationships. Knowing that my work contributes to something bigger than myself gives me a sense of purpose.

That is why I love where I work. I am proud to be part of a team that invests in its people, serves with heart, and is always striving to grow. I am excited to continue growing alongside this organization and to be part of the positive impact we make every day.”

“It’s about people, purpose, and the meaningful connections we create every day.”

Iris Calloway, Community Relationship Manager, JHCU

“Why do I love my credit union? Because it’s about people, purpose, and the meaningful connections we create every day.

During a visit to one of our community sites, a member stopped to give me a hug and shared how much she appreciated the continued support she has always received from JHCU.

That genuine moment was a powerful reminder that our work goes far beyond banking. It’s about building trust, creating connections, and making people feel valued and supported.

I am proud to be part of a credit union that puts people first and strengthens our communities one relationship at a time.”

"An institution that truly embodies the 'People Helping People' philosophy."

Victor Gonzales, Vice President, State Employees' Credit Union

“I am proud to be a member of State Employees' Credit Union (SECU), an institution that truly embodies the "People Helping People" philosophy. Unlike traditional financial institutions driven by corporate profits, SECU is a member-owned cooperative. They look beyond credit scores to listen to individual stories, offering fair loans and critical financial lifelines to people who might otherwise be turned away. By prioritizing community over profit, SECU helps build a more inclusive and resilient financial future for everyone.”

“Every decision we make starts with one question: how can we create value for our members and the communities we serve?”

Nate, Wright-Patt Credit Union

“From my perspective, what makes Wright-Patt Credit Union special is that we're genuinely focused on people rather than profits. Every decision we make starts with one question: how can we create value for our members and the communities we serve?

As a member-owned financial cooperative, our success is measured differently. We're not driven by shareholders. Instead, we invest back into our members through competitive rates, lower fees, innovative financial products, and personalized service. That member-first mindset is woven into everything we do.

I'm also proud of the impact we make beyond banking. Whether it's supporting local nonprofits, providing financial education, investing in community development, or helping people achieve important life milestones, Wright-Patt Credit Union strives to be a trusted partner in improving financial well-being.

What really stands out to me is our ability to combine the strength and capabilities of a large financial institution with the heart and personal service of a local organization. Even as we've grown to serve hundreds of thousands of members and manage billions in assets, we've stayed committed to the cooperative principles and community focus that have defined us since the beginning.

At the end of the day, Wright-Patt Credit Union is special because we're here to help people succeed financially and build stronger communities, and that's a mission our employees, leadership, and members all believe in.”

Whether the story begins with a member opening their first account, an employee discovering their purpose, or a family finding someone they can trust, each one points back to the same idea: credit unions change lives through relationships.

At NLCUP, we believe those relationships are especially important as we work to strengthen Latino leadership, expand financial opportunity, and ensure our communities have access to institutions that see, understand, and invest in them.

To everyone who shared their story, thank you.

Your words are a reminder that while we celebrate #ILoveMyCreditUnion Day once a year, the work behind it happens every single day.
